Archaic people were the next tradition, lasting from 8,000-1,000 BCE. Archaic people were hunter-gatherers, and did not stay at one point for long. They ate whitetail deeer, bears, and wild turkey. Shellfish, oysters, berries, and roots were also part of their diet. Some late Archaic people became semi-nomadic. Late Archaic people also began cooking, building relationships with other groups, and trading. They were the first to really use the atlatl, a mechanism that made throwing projectile spears easier. The atlatl made it easier for hunters because the atlatl threw the spear harder and faster, all while the hunter could stand farther away from danger.
