The Savannah River creates the boundary between South Carolina and Georgia. It provides water to many of Georgia's counties, including the large cities Augusta and former Georgia capital Savannah. The first European explorer to see the river was Hernando de Soto. The river has also been dammed up many times, and the water is used overwhelmingly by Georgia and South Carolina. The states are trying to even out the usage of the river and the huge metropolitan intake of water. People are also concerned for the cleanliness and safety of the water.
