Although the relationship between the colonies and the Crown had been tense for a while, some things really set the war in the colonies' sights.
The French and Indian War was one of these causes. The war was expensive, so to pay for the supplies, the King imposed taxes on things that were usually tax-free- like tea. Colonists began to boycott British goods. Then came the second blow. The Proclamation of 1763 stated that the land gained from the French and Indian War was not open for colonists to explore and settle. Only the land east of the Mississippi River was open to settlement. All lands west of the Mississippi was left to the Natives in order to avoid disputes between the settlers and the Natives. In 1764, Britain imposed the Stamp Act without the colonists' consent. Every single piece of paper were taxed. Eventually, due to all the colonies protesting the tax, the act was repealed. In 1765, the Intolerable Acts were passed, also without the colonies' consent. The Intolerable Acts included the Quartering Act, which angered the colonists the most. It said that British soldiers were allowed quarters in a house even without consent. Three other acts were passed tThe Declaration of Independence, written and signed in 1776, was the signed document that stated that the colonies were breaking free of British rule. These were the various causes that led up to the American Revolution. |
