sentence structure
There are four types of sentences: simple, compound, complex, and complex-compound. Each has it own specific properties, but they can sometimes be hard to differentiate. We first need to know what clauses are.
ALL SENTENCES NEED A PERIOD AT THE END!
Independent clauses are clauses that can stand on their own. They have a subject and a working verb. Independent clauses are link by coordinate conjunctions, like the FANBOYS we all know about. (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so).
I saw a bird fly my way, and it was a scary bird.
I saw a bird fly my way.
Dependent clauses have a subject and a working verb, but can't stand on their own. That's because they have a subordinate conjunction (when, above, where, after, until, once, AWHITEBUS).
When I saw a bird fly my way. (it's a fragment!)
Simple sentences are made up of a single independent clause. They can have compound subjects and compound predicates, but not two independent clauses or a dependent clause.
EX: Robert and I screamed and squealed.
Robert and I screamed.
Robert screamed and squealed.
Compound sentences are made up of two independent clauses linked by a coordinate conjunction and commas or semicolons. If the second independent clauses is made of only a subject and verb, there is no need for a comma or semicolon.
EX: Robert screamed; I squealed.
Robert ran away in terror, but I stood my ground.
I ran away in terror but Robert fainted.
I fainted, so Robert fainted.
Robert fainted, yet I did not notice.
Complex sentences are made up of one independent clause and one dependent clause. They are linked by a subordinate conjunction, like when, above, once, although, whenever. If the dependent clause is first, the dependent clause is connected to the rest of the sentence by a comma. If the dependent clause is last, it does not need a comma.
EX: When I fainted, Robert ran away in terror.
Whenever the bird fainted, I ran away in terror.
Robert began screaming once the bird swooped down on us.
Compound-complex sentences are created with two independent clauses and one dependent clause. These are linked by subordinate and coordinate conjunctions.
EX: Although Robert screamed and squealed, I stood my ground and the bird flew away in terror.
Once I fainted, Robert ran away in terror and the bird just stared at us.
